Is there a way to connect to the Barix Instreamer directly? We would like to get the audio from the device with as little lag as possible.

Sure. All you have to do is assign the Instreamer an IP address and connect a computer or an Exstreamer right to it with a crossover cable, switch or hub. It will stream directly to the device.
